My niece had her first birthday a few days ago and I realised the opportunity to try and bake my first fancy cake. I never made something with 'levels' before, let alone something covered in marzipan paste or fondant.
I definitly wanted to do something pink.
I decided for a simple strawberry and cream filling, with sponge base and sponge on top so the cover wouldn't soak.
I made a simple fondant (from icing sugar, water and lemon juice, without glycerol), rolled it out and covered the whole cake, than coloured the rests of the fondant with red food colour and shaped some blossoms and the number.
Ick! Too sweet to eat :D but it's for the looks and for my first fondant covered cake I was quite pleased with it :)
