A 1,5h quickie piece I did today. It was fun to use the selection lasso in a free way, but thus the lighting is rather incoherent. This was more about colours anyway...

I was a little afraid of this painting, but once I started I somehow got into the flow.

First I made some perspective drawings - I always thought, perspective was scary, but there are only a few rules you need to follow and everything will be fine. I the studies I only used one-point perspective, but for the image it looked better with three-point. Working digitally is again really wonderful in this regard.

When I had my grids and rough castle design, the next tricky thing was the character's pose, I really struggled with it like "how did he get up there?" "is it even possible to stand on such a sloping roof?"... etc. I had to correct this and that in the later phase when I rendered Drizzt. Had to resize him drastically to make it look less ridiculous.

I screwed up the composition, but didn't want to begin anew. In the end I tried to fix it by mirroring the picture (thank gods, he has a symmetrical design!) and choosing a more narrow crop.

I'm particularly happy with the character and his cloak and swords, though I never read the books or played Dungeons&Dragons. I could only draw him with the help of the still-SOPA-free Internet.

I used no textures and almost no special brushes in this, mostly I switched between two standard brushes.

Cleaning up my stuff from last year, I found this piece I wanted to post here since I finished it, but not without the work in progress. It was my most elaborate painting in 2011 and I strictly used one method. Usually tend to draw and paint chaotically, no matter if foreground or background, detail or not, adding another layer every half an hour if I feel the need; without system.

In this pinup - done for a challenge on conceptart.org - I made orderly layers for every object here, sometimes more layers if needed, for the details in the glass or the shelf. Collapsing layers whenever I could or else the background alone would be 3 or 4 layers.

Also I used the selection tool often. Now the edges look very clean and sharp, nothing I usually desire, but I allowed myself to leave it like this rather than going over everything again in the end.

This flatting or block-in method I learned from Anne, for whose comics I've been doing flats for over a year, now. I always thought this method was a bit too restricting to me, too far from traditional painting and only Hannes's shared .psd-files finally got me to use it.

These two drawings were done with ink and brush. I'm proud I didn't need white ink. The two fit together. I digitally saw them together. But they are actually meant to be apart.

they didn't take my application, but I like some of the stuff in this teeth themed portfolio.

These depict the life phases based on teeth. In German particularly the false teeth are called 'third teeth' or just 'thirds' („die Dritten"). So these are named 'First Teeth, Second Teeth, Third Teeth'.

They were done on ivory coloured sketch paper with lead pencil and neon yellow (highlighter) coloured pencil. For online display I edited the colours, because usually highlighter colours lose all their brilliance when scanned. No need to explain that here, hm?

I love watercolour. You can't do almost anything wrong with it. If you're good you can make it look incredibly clean and regular, or the other way around let the paint and water do the job on their own and control nothing.
My current handling of watercolour is something inbetween. I want to try both loosening up and fully control the medium. Uhm, but better not at once.

Here are some new sketches.

I doodled a bit on this sheet of watercolour paper. The hydrangea and the dog in the grass were done with watercolour pencils.

My favourite is this ...fantasy flower. It looks pleasant although the colours are all 'wrong'. Maybe I will explore this colourfulness a bit more..

I had a book buying frenzy and I'm very pleased with my purchases!

Rien Poortvliet - Dogs, an artbook I've known since my childhood and wanted for years. A wonderful piece of literature for every friend of dogs and traditional painting.

Carter Goodrich - Say Hello to Zorro!, the newest hit of the character designer of Ratatouille and Open Season (and many more awesome animations). There will be more stories of Mr Bud and Zorro, our protagonists from this book. Can't wait for them!

Hm, which one next...?

Richard E. Williams - The Animator's Survival Kit. Just out of interest, maybe I want to do some animation, I searched for the best book for beginners and everyone recommended me this one. It's huge (392 out of my 1442 pages); contentwise, too.

The next two I haven't read completely yet. I bought them because I love the authors' way of storytelling (and drawing of course!).

Craig Thompson - Habibi consists of 672 pages of beautiful ink drawings by the author of Blankets. He worked years on this tome and it was all worth it! Although Blankets was one of the main reasons I bought Habibi I'm irritated that "author of Blankets" is printed on this beautiful cover (dark and bright red with gold (!) embossing). Very subtly though...
and by the way, the price is hilarious for a book with such high quality binding and printing (and size)!

Luke Pearson - Everything We Miss. Another sad and beautiful comic (yes, I use this word even if it's not comedy. 'Graphic Novel' leaves a bad taste in my mouth). Only bad thing I can find about it: it stinks. Hope the smell goes away. (Optic and haptic experience makes up for it though. Great paper, spot colour, love it!)

Luke Pearson - Hildafolk. Can't say much about it, but "love it!" :D Instead I link you to his website and particularly to his comic Some People which made me a fan.

Jean David Morvan (Author), Philippe Buchet (Illustrator) - Sillage 1 has gorgeous artwork, awesome storytelling, strong characters... a perfect comic. Hearsay is that Sillage is continously great. Wish I had the money...

And with that I close. There are so many superb printed things out there. Wish I had more money :D
But for now I should finish these pages. And the Game of Thrones books (by George R. R. Martin) I afforded months ago, but hadn't had the time to read. I'm not a bookworm (more into optics, thus comics) and I exspected some light fantasy, but got a brilliantly intricate story instead.

Ah, and speaking of money. Despite the fact that I had to pay £11.41 for delivery and taxes on my order of four of these books from amazon.co.uk I still spent way less money than if I had bought the books from amazon.de where delivery would have been free (I live in Germany).

My niece had her first birthday a few days ago and I realised the opportunity to try and bake my first fancy cake. I never made something with 'levels' before, let alone something covered in marzipan paste or fondant.
I definitly wanted to do something pink.
I decided for a simple strawberry and cream filling, with sponge base and sponge on top so the cover wouldn't soak.
I made a simple fondant (from icing sugar, water and lemon juice, without glycerol), rolled it out and covered the whole cake, than coloured the rests of the fondant with red food colour and shaped some blossoms and the number.
Ick! Too sweet to eat :D but it's for the looks and for my first fondant covered cake I was quite pleased with it :)

The following was an activity challenge on conceptart, the given topic was "Born Bad". I paste my creature description that is required with the submission:

Concept: Wasteland Autovescer

The wasteland autovescer Nemolynx autovescus, native to almost all M-class planets of the galaxy rim, is the largest carnivorous land vertebrate to dwell stony and meager wastelands all over the planet. Particularly sparse hills and plateaus offer only very few hunting opportunities. To avoid the starving of a newborn autovescer, two cubs develop in the mother's belly, of which one is underdeveloped and not meant to grow up. The other cub, born alive with a taste for fresh blood will feast on its sibling while the mother is still licking it dry.

I think the concept is totally alright, but my execution sucks. *gets to work on it*

Covers for Comics that don't exist

I wanted to do something like this for months. I was given the chance, including the little pressure I need to finish. It was an activity assignment on conceptart.org to make a cover for every title given. Sometimes the description was more detailed like with Frankenstein or John Cotton, other titles were totally free to interpret.

In order of making:

maybe the concept with the strongest impact, because rather photographic, but I'm not pleased with my execution...

Inspired by polynesian culture, which is not so known but overall amazing. I like my font (painted, like the face) with drybrush ink on watercolour paper).

Comics are not all serious. Amy's Doll in my imagination is a twinkle-toe light reading for all ages.

I had this idea about a woman in a box office very early while doing this challenge, but all my other composition ideas included to much environment, which is one of my weakest points...

this was the hardest for me. The story takes place in the Old West after the US civil war and I'm not exactly an expert in US history, as exciting as it might be - but I simply wasn't teached it like I was teached european history. Gosh, in my school life we covered the Weimarer Republik and WWII three times. But we didn't even get into post-war German/German history, so no-one can exspect we covered anything from oversees...
anyway, the John-guy on this cover is totally drawn free hand and I'm pretty satisfied with it. Looks like a black male to me, full of strength yet a bit at loss what to do with his new-won freedom. The slaves were freed but they weren't given the same rights as white people for several more decades...

I made a wrap cover, because it adds to the mood :-P

well, I seem to be the simple type with covers... that got nooooooothing to do with my skills, nooooooooo....

Although I have not been posting my thermometer records last year, I still have been recording dutifully.
I even felt a little daring when preparing the graph to compare last year with 2009. As you can see, 2009 was by comparison rather bumpy with a definite drop in May and June, while 2010 was constantly rising towards the mid of July and continously dropping towards December.

I was never good with these graph thingies. And it's gotten worse with Excel2007 and not better with Excel2010, because my already lacking patience was stressed too much... I think.

I coloured this beautiful lineart by elma.

It's worth mentioning that aside from my flatting job for trenchmaker this was my most elaborate work in months.

The finished piece. It's watercolour on A5 Winsor&Newton Smooth Surface Cartridge Pad, 220g/m², slightly yellow. The lines were printed with laser printer.

I wanted the figure to brightly pop out from the background. I had put up the masking fluid weeks before and then buried the sheet under a pile of paper. I know, one should not let the masking fluid be on the paper too long. Two days maximun and stuff, they are saying.
Well, after the wash it peeled off the paper quite nice. But it took some of the printer toner with it, so I lost line detail on crucial areas...

Before the wash I had taped the sheet to my wooden table. Plus point: the paper doesn't go all wavy (so much). Minus point: you can't turn the thing.

When I do a spontaneous project I mostly consider the internet for reference.
This time I want to paint a piece of furniture in the style of wall pictures as they can be seen in japanese publich bath houses, so called sentō. The mostly depict the Fujisan, the highest japanese mountain.
I once saw a tv documentary about a painter who lived from painting these sentō walls, that's how I knew about it.
So to freshen up my mental image of such a painting, I let google search it for me. With sparse results... (keywords: sento fujisan)
When I typed in 銭湯富士山 (the same keywords in kanji) I got a more satisfying cluster of results. (I used wikipedia to translate. And used .co.uk just for fun.)

That's what I made out of it until now... the skype-blue proved very resistent to thinning yesterday, so it's a pretty much blocked-in-only color...

To do:
- greying the fujisan
- refining needles and grass
- shading the trunk and branches
- adding more trees on lower edge
- maybe adding some more clouds to break the blueblock-sky?

The Movie REDLINE by Takeshi Koike just blew away my brain and jumped on top of my Cinematic Experiences of the Year list.

I had the chance to see it on big screen on the Fantasy Filmfest here in Berlin. Whoaaaah!

I don't find anything to grizzle about that movie. It's just awwwwwwwwwwesome! I never liked DiCaprio as much as in here. And every single one of the supporting actors did a gorgeous job!
